Congressional Gold Medal for WWII Rangers"The House of Representatives Bill H.R. 6263 has now been written to gain Presidential authorization for the Congressional Gold Medal for WWII Rangers. It is now up for support from other Representatives, and a 2/3rds majority is required to move the bill forward. There are about 50 remaining WWII Rangers for whom we have contact so this is an urgent request to Congress. There were at least seven West Point graduates who were in WWII Ranger Battalions. Of particular note, COL William O. Darby '33, was selected in 1942 to command the 1st Ranger Battalion and then later commanded the entire Ranger Force (which included the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Ranger Battalions) and was promoted posthumously to Brigadier General. LTC Henry Mucci '36, organized the 6th Ranger Battalion from a pack-mule artillery unit, and later was part of the Ranger force which liberated the 513 Allied prisoners at Cabanatuan in the Philippines in January 1945. MG(R) John C. Raaen, Jr. Jan '43, landed on the beaches at Omaha, is still with us today, and remains a very vibrant and enthusiastic supporter of the World War II Rangers. Other West Point WWII Rangers include Ralph Colby '40; John Dobson '39; Robert Garrett '41; and James Greene '43. We urge that all West Point Rangers contact their Congressional Representatives and ask for their support of H.R. Bill 6263. Anyone with question can contact RonHudnell@aol.com.”
