COL(R) Matthew Klimow is the new United States Ambassador to Turkmenistan. Prior to embarking on a diplomatic career, Ambassador Klimow served as an infantry officer for over 29 years. He commanded at the battalion and brigade level and is a recipient of the Silver Star. Other key assignments include military advisor to the Secretary of State (1995-1998), Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (2000-2002), and Special Advisor to the Vice President of the United States (2002-2003). His diplomatic postings include Executive Director for the Bureau of Consular Affairs (2003-2008), Deputy Assistant Secretary General of NATO in Brussels, Belgium (2012-2015), and Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of State for Management (2018-2019). He was a founding member of the West Point Marathon Team in 1974 and served as the team’s captain.
