The West Point Society of Greater Cincinnati sponsored the 11th annual Leadership and Ethics Seminar on Friday, February 3, where they hosted more than 50 schools and over 200 students and faculty advisors. A team of about two dozen USMA alumni—Led by Stephanie Markich ’99, Dugan Wood ’08, Annah McDowell ’94, and Dan Thueneman ’11—along with ROTC cadets from nearby Xavier University and Miami University, friends of the West Point Society, and local sponsors, planted seeds of ethical leadership into the minds of hundreds of young leaders. Over the last 10 years, the WPS of Greater Cincinnati has trained over 2,000 students and hundreds of teachers, coaches, counselors, and principals in the tristate area. Several past participants have gone on to graduate from USMA and continue to generate buzz for the Academy. Jenny Kilgore, a parent of a ’98 graduate and a ’00 graduate, USMA Military Academy Liaison Officer and former Ohio State Board of Education member, has been a faculty facilitator since the event started. This year, local high school Coach Tom Rapp kicked off the event by discussing his recent back-to-back Ohio boys cross country state titles and describing the makeup of servant leadership. Students spent four hours in small groups discussing and role-playing ethical vignettes, while faculty conversed about establishing mentorship programs in their schools. At the end of the event, four hand-selected students who attended the event previously and completed an extensive mentoring program received $1,500 scholarships.
