MG Heidi V. Brown has spent her three-decade-plus career breaking down barriers and being a trendsetter for women in the Army. Brown, a 55-year-old El Pasoan, is about to embark on the latest challenge in her ground-breaking career.
In mid-February, she will become the director of global operations for U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. U.S. Strategic Command oversees the U.S. nuclear arsenal, space operations, cyber operations, missile defense and joint electronic warfare, among other missions. The command also is responsible for combating weapons of mass destruction.
Brown will be the first Army general officer to serve as operations officer with Strategic Command, a position normally occupied by a two-star Air Force general or a two-star admiral. Brown has also been told that she is the first woman to serve as operations officer for any combatant command, of which there are nine across the Department of Defense. Full Story»
