Maj. Gen. Clarence K.K. Chinn assumed command of U.S. Army South during a change of command ceremony on Thursday, June 4. The ceremony was held at U.S. Army South headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas. U.S. Army South is a major subordinate command of FORSCOM and conducts multinational exercises and coordinates security for the areas under the purview of United States Southern Command. Chinn, who took over for outgoing commander Maj. Gen. Joseph DiSalvo, said during the ceremony that he was honored to have been selected for such a prestigious position and to continue the proud legacy of U.S. Army South.
"I am appreciative, as I have transitioned, to observe 'Juntos Podemos - Together We Can' is more than just a slogan; that it is a state of mind that represents the foundation for everything being done in this command," Chinn said. "The integration, synchronization, spirit of partnership and cooperation is on target and I look forward to continuing to foster the teamwork generated with joint, interagency, inter-organizational, multinational responses to challenges in Latin America."
Chinn's most recent assignment was deputy commanding general for U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N.C. Chinn previously served as Commanding General of Fort Polk and the Joint Readiness Training Center from Jan. 2011 to Nov. 2013. He has also served as Chief of Staff for the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C., and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Joint Command (Provisional); Deputy Commanding General (support) for Combined Joint Task Force 82 in Afghanistan and as Deputy Commanding General (support) of the 82nd Airborne Division; and Deputy Commanding General for Afghan National Security Forces Development South of Kabul for CJTF 101, Afghanistan. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and holds a master's degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. Read More
