WOODSTOCK, IL - Deputy Police Chief John Lieb has been appointed to fill the chief position after Chief Robert Lowen retires in June. Lieb started with the Woodstock police in 2000 as a patrol officer and was promoted to sergeant in 2005 before becoming deputy chief in 2011. “We are extremely pleased that the results of this process validated the feelings of everyone who has worked with John Lieb over the past 15 years,” Woodstock City Manager Roscoe Stelford said in a statement.
“John has proven himself to be an exceptional leader who will serve both the residents and employees of the Woodstock Police Department admirably.” Lieb is a graduate of Northwestern University's School of Police Staff and Command. Lieb has recently received his master's in public administration from Villanova University. Lieb will oversee the staff's 51 employees and manage the department's $4.9 million budget. When he starts June 4, Lieb said he’s looking forward to being in a more visible position with the city.
“As deputy chief you spend a lot of time behind the scenes making sure the operation works smoothly,” Lieb said. “Now as chief, I’ll have an opportunity to help steer the direction of the initiatives and programs of the police department.” Lieb said there will be multiple position changes within the department after he takes over, but those changes, including who will fill the deputy chief position, have not yet been decided.
