Gary Vogler ’73 "Iraq and the Politics of Oil"

Gary Vogler ’73 "Iraq and the Politics of Oil, An Insiders Perspective"Gary Vogler’s long-awaited book, Iraq and the Politics of Oil, An Insiders Perspective, on the US government’s role in the Iraq oil sector is currently available to order for November delivery by the University Press of Kansas and other book outlets.

Was the Iraq war really about oil? As a senior advisor for the Office for Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance (ORHA) and briefly as the minister of oil, Gary Vogler thought he knew. But while doing research for a book about his experience in Iraq, Vogler discovered that what he knew was not the whole story – or even the true story. The Iraq war did have an oil agenda underlying it, one that Vogler previously denied.

The following is a back-cover comment that shares observations from a notable reader:

Retired Lieutenant General Jay Garner, 2003 ORHA Leader
“This important book provides the reader with a mosaic of the Iraq oil story from 2002 to 2011; it is written by the one American who experienced and contributed to all of it. Gary Vogler describes the details of our country’s prewar oil planning, followed by the challenges of executing those plans once inside of Iraq. As a former army officer and oil industry executive, Gary was uniquely qualified to be the senior oil advisor to both the U.S. Coalition and the newly formed Iraqi Government. His advice, experience and leadership was instrumental in re-starting the Iraqi oil sector. This is a must read for all senior military and foreign service officers.”

Iraq and the Politics of Oil is published by the University Press of Kansas.

Bodnar ’01 Named President University of Montana

Seth Bodnar '01Seth Bodnar was named President of the University of Montana and will take office, starting January first. Bodnar is a Rhodes scholar with two masters degrees from Oxford University and currently an executive at General Electric. Lee Banville, the University Faculty Association’s spokesman, says the union is optimistic and this could be a new era for UM. "I think what will become really apparent very quickly is how deep is that commitment to being transparent about decision making," Banville said. "Will he start by tackling some of the budget issues the university faces by turning inward, or opening up the process and bringing more people to the table so these decisions can be made more in the open?"

Bodnar has the least academic experience among the four finalists for UM’s presidency. Banville says that’s a concern for some faculty, but that he can counter it by surrounding himself with a strong team. "If that turns out to be the case I think what we might get is a mix of new management thinking with established academic traditions, which could be an exciting moment," Banville said. "But I think he also needs to follow through with that commitment to openness and working with people in areas where he’s not as familiar, because an academic institution is very different from a corporation." Bodnar inherits a university that has seen declining enrollment since 2010, and is dealing with budgeting and personnel challenges as a result. Read More

First In, Last Out: An American Paratrooper in Vietnam with the 101st and Vietnamese Airborne by John HowardJohn Howard has released the book First In, Last Out: An American Paratrooper in Vietnam with the 101st and Vietnamese Airborne. Fresh out of West Point, John Howard arrived for his first tour in Vietnam in 1965, the first full year of escalation when U.S. troop levels increased to 184,000 from 23,000 the year before. When he returned for a second tour in 1972, troop strength stood at 50,000 and would dwindle to a mere 50 the following year. He thus participated in the very early and very late stages of American military involvement in the Vietnam War. His two tours—one as a platoon commander and member of an elite counterguerrilla force, the second as a senior advisor to the South Vietnamese—provide a fascinating lens through which to view not only one soldier’s experience in Vietnam, but also the country’s.
